A video is circulating on Facebook claiming that fallen Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina appeared publicly in New Delhi. But Dismislab’s fact-check shows the footage is from a press conference held after the 2024 national election at Ganabhaban, her then official residence in Bangladesh.

The video was shared on Facebook recently with the caption, “🤔 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina seen openly in New Delhi🔥.” The video shows Hasina greeting people. The clip has been viewed more than 100,000 times and shared over 1,000 times.

Fact-check of a viral Nepal protest video falsely shared on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube as anti-Muslim violence and arson attacks in Kolkata after the West Bengal election.

One user, who believed it to be true, commented, “Move forward, sister. Victory is surely ours.” Another wrote, “Mother of Humanity, wishing you good health and long life. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.” The same video spread earlier with the same claim. On November 4, the page “Bongobondhur Soinik Chandpur 4” posted it with the caption, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held an open meeting with Awami League leaders and activists in New Delhi.” That video received more than 11,000 views.

Reverse image searches of key frames led Dismislab to multiple news reports (1, 2, 3). The reports show the video is from January 8, 2024. According to several news outlets (1, 2, 3), Bangladesh held its 12th national election on January 7. The next day, on January 8, the Awami League announced that Sheikh Hasina would face local and foreign journalists.

At the press conference, she delivered a written statement and answered questions from local and foreign media and election observers. At the start of the event, she greeted journalists and observers. The circulated video shows this greeting session before the press conference. A Bangladesh Television (BTV) news report confirms this.

The report shows that her sari, the person behind her, the color of the clothing, and the Ganabhaban wall all match the viral video. The report states: “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is greeting local and foreign observers and journalists at Ganabhaban on the occasion of the 12th National Parliamentary Election 2024. Date: January 08, 2024.”

This means the video shared with the claim that Sheikh Hasina appeared publicly in New Delhi is actually from her post-election press conference at Ganabhaban in Bangladesh in 2024.

False claims about Sheikh Hasina appearing in public abroad are not new. A three-year-old video of her visiting the Nizamuddin Auliya shrine in Delhi was circulated with the same false claim. In 2022, a video of her traveling to London to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral was also falsely shared as Sheikh Hasina appeared publicly in India.
