Beaten woman is not an executive magistrate
A video has recently circulated on the social media platform Facebook claiming that a female executive magistrate is being beaten. However, a fact-check by Dismislab reveals that the video depicts a scene of a female entrepreneur being beaten in front of the police at the Kapar Bazar (cloth market) in Rajbari.
On August 30, a video was posted from a Facebook profile with a caption reading, “Raising a hand on an executive magistrate, punching, kicking, failed government BNP.” In the 27-second video, two men are seen kicking and pushing a woman wearing a pink salwar kameez (traditional South Asian outfit). A female police officer is seen holding the woman.
The video was seen being posted with the same claim from multiple Facebook profiles (1, 2, 3, 4) and a page (1). The video was also posted from an Instagram account.
To verify authenticity, conducting a reverse image search using the video’s keyframes leads to a report published by bdnews24. The image used in this report shows an exact match with the scene from the circulated video. One portion of the report states, “A video of a woman being kicked and pushed in front of police at Rajbari’s Kapar Bazar has spread on social media. Rajbari’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Md Shamsul Haque said that the incident took place at Rajbari Kapar Bazar on Saturday afternoon.”
The report stated that the conflict arose after a shop employee quit their job at a woman’s shop on the third floor or Kaderia Market. The owner complained to the cloth market business leaders that the employee left because she wanted to open a shop herself.
When the business leaders expressed their inability to resolve the matter, the owner, along with a few other women, held a procession. As the atmosphere became increasingly heated, the cloth market businessmen closed all the shops, demanding punishment for the woman. They also attacked her as well as her shop.
Additionally, multiple media outlets (1, 2, 3, 4) published reports on the incident. All the reports referred to the victim as a female entrepreneur.
That is to say, the beaten woman is not an executive magistrate.
