A photocard has spread on Facebook claiming that 60 percent of voters in Bangladesh prefer the Awami League party, which was ousted in a mass uprising in 2024. However, Dismislab’s fact-check shows that the image used in the card is from the results of a public opinion survey conducted by Eminence Associates for Social Development (EASD). According to the EASD survey presented to the media on January 5, 70 percent of people expressed interest in voting for the BNP, Awami League’s rival party.

The photocard was posted from a personal Facebook profile on January 5, the day EASD published its survey results. The card reads, “60 percent of voters prefer Awami League. BNP 22 percent, Jamaat–NCP alliance 15 percent.” The caption of the post says, “Awami League is at the top of voters’ preference list.” The post’s comment section shows many people believed the claim to be true. One user commented, “Right,” and another wrote, “100% right, Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.”

A reverse image search found several news reports (1, 2, 3, 4). On January 5, Prothom Alo published a report titled, “70 percent of people want to vote for BNP.” The report stated that Eminence Associates for Social Development (EASD) conducted the public opinion survey, whose findings were presented before the media by its Chief Executive Officer Shamim Haider Talukder.

The report further said, “He [Shamim Haider] stated that opinions were collected in person from 20,495 people across all 300 parliamentary constituencies of the country. The survey was conducted from December 20 last year to January 1 this year. The survey report found that 70 percent of the people will vote for the BNP in the 13th National Parliamentary Election. Public support for Jamaat-e-Islami stands at 19 percent.”

A report published by Bangla Tribune said, “According to the survey, in response to the question ‘Whom will you vote for in the next election’ 70 percent of voters expressed support for the BNP. Nineteen percent of voters chose Jamaat-e-Islami. In addition, 2.6 percent of people said they would vote for the National Citizen Party (NCP), and 5 percent said they would vote for other parties. Only 0.2 percent of people said they would not vote.”

The images used in each of these reports match the image used in the circulated photocard.

A post about the survey was also found on the Facebook page of EASD on January 4. In that post, they published a statement saying that the survey results would be presented on January 5. Dismislab also contacted the organization, and it said the survey results were shared in a press release and that various media outlets ran stories based on the findings.

Notably, the daily Prothom Alo published a report on December 26, 2018, citing a shadow voting survey done by the Research and Development Center (RDC). The report was titled “60 percent of votes went in favor of the Awami League.

The report stated, “The shadow voting results of an organization called the Research and Development Center (RDC) show that 60 percent of the country’s voters voted for the Awami League. Meanwhile, 22 percent of voters voted for the BNP and Oikya Front. In that vote, 10 percent of people could not say whom they would vote for. In the shadow vote, 4 percent voted for the Jatiya Party. And 3 percent of voters refused to vote. However, 98 percent of the voters who participated in the survey said they want to take part and vote in the 11th National Election.”
