Multiple videos have spread on the social media platform Facebook claiming to show recent processions by the banned political party Awami League. In some instances, it is claimed that at that very moment, the Paltan Maidan in Dhaka city was filled to the brim with Awami League leaders and activists. In others, it is alleged that the Pirojpur District Chhatra League brought out a protest procession today. However, a fact-check by Dismislab has found that these circulated videos are old.

On April 12, a 30-second video was posted from a Facebook profile named “Bangladesh Awami League.” The caption read, “At this moment, the Paltan Maidan of Dhaka city has been filled to capacity by Awami League leaders and activists; these are soldiers of Bangabandhu, they cannot be stopped even by banning them; Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.” Up to the time of writing this report, the video has been viewed more than 150,000 times and shared nearly 1,500 times.

The video shows a group of people moving forward in a street procession holding a banner. Slogans can be heard saying, “Jamaat-Shibir Razakars, leave Bengal this moment,” “Wherever we find Shibir, there will be a fight,” and “The hideout of BNP, break it, smash it.” The banner read, “Protest procession and protest rally against the nationwide anarchy, mayhem, and attacks on police by the anti-national BNP-Jamaat.” The name of one individual, Engineer Abu Mohammad Mohiuddin, is mentioned on the banner.

The same Facebook profile shared another 19-second video on April 11. Similarly, it shows a group of people holding a banner in a procession. The slogan “Sheikh Hasina need not fear, we have not left the streets” is heard. The caption read, “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu. Pirojpur District Chhatra League has brought out a protest procession; Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.” The banner read, “Pirojpur District Chhatra League.” The name of an individual named Saimun Islam Sakib is visible on the procession banner. This video has been viewed more than 50,000 times to date and shared approximately a thousand times.

A relevant keyword search located Facebook profiles in the names of the individuals mentioned on the banners. It was found that the first video was posted on the profile of Abu Mohammed Mohiuddin on September 25, 2022. It was learned that he is a leader of the Chattogram Metropolitan Jubo League. Additionally, several photos of the same incident were found in a different post. The captions for these posts stated, “A protest procession led by Chattogram Metropolitan Jubo League leader Engineer Abu Mohammad Mohiuddin and a mass gathering at the Chattogram Press Club premises were held in protest against the nationwide anarchy, terrorism, disorder, and attacks on police by BNP-Jamaat and anti-national forces.”

Furthermore, a news outlet named Ekushey Patrika provided the same information in its report. According to the report, the protest procession led by Jubo League leader Abu Mohammed Mohiuddin began from the Kazir Dewri area of Chattogram city.

A keyword search also located a Facebook profile in the name of Saimun Islam Sakib. It was found that he is the joint general secretary of the Pirojpur Municipal Branch Ward No. 8 Chhatra League. Exactly the same video was seen posted on his profile on July 15, 2024. The individuals visible in the video, their clothing, and the banner match the recently circulated video perfectly.

That is to say, the two videos circulating with the claim of recent Awami League and Chhatra League processions are more than three and a half years old and one and a half years old, respectively.

In this context, the same profile has previously been seen spreading old procession videos as recent, and Dismislab has published fact-check reports regarding those instances as well.

All social media captions, quotations, and news excerpts in this article have been translated into English from the languages in which they were originally posted or published.
