This is a video of a plane crash in Russia in 2021, not Nepal
On January 15, 2023, an aircraft crashed near Pokhara, Nepal. There were 72 people on board Flight 691 of Yeti Airlines, including 68 passengers. On social media, many misleading images and videos about this terrible incident have surfaced.
Several people have uploaded a video titled Nepal plane accident scene on social media (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). The video shows the plane’s wings catching fire and collapsing as it flew over a hilly location.
Nevertheless, Dismislab verification revealed that the video does not show the accident that occurred in Pokhara, Nepal.
This video depicts a Soviet Ilyushin IL-112V prototype military transport jet, which crashed a year ago. On August 17, 2021, the aircraft crashed during a test flight at Kubinka Airport in Russia.
A reverse image search from the viral video’s frame revealed an identical video on the Russian social media platform VKontakte, which was released on August 17, 2021.
The 1 minute and 18 second video’s caption references Moscow in Russian.
Many similar videos were found in various media publications after searching the keyword ‘moscow plane accident 2021’ on Google.
One of those is a video titled “WATCH: Burning Russian cargo plane crashes during test-flight near Moscow; 3 dead” that was posted on Republic World’s YouTube channel on August 17, 2021.
The video was also attached to The Insider’s article on the jet disaster in Russia on August 17, 2021.
According to the report, the Russian Ilyushin IL-112V military transport plane crashed during testing. The plane crashed 45 kilometers west of Moscow on the Kubinka airstrip. Three people were killed as a result of this, including two test pilots and one flight engineer.
The event was covered in several foreign media outlets, including Reuters, AP News, and Euro News.
So, the claim that the video in question is footage from a Nepalese plane accident is false.
