Fake BBC Bangla photocard claims Razakar-free Bangladesh in December
A photocard with the BBC Bangla logo has spread on Facebook, showing an image of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Below the image, the text reads, “The country will again become free of Razakars in December.” But Dismislab’s fact-check found the photocard was fake.
The photocard started spreading from a Facebook page on December 7. In the lower left corner of the card, the logo of BBC Bangla and the website name appear. The headline on the card states, “The country will again become free of Razakars in December. We are ready.” On the top left of the card, the name “Atika Binte Hossain” and a Facebook profile picture appear. The photo and name match the poster’s own photo and name. The post caption reads, “Crores of leaders and activists stand ready to liberate the country again.”
A Facebook user comments on the post: “OH, helpless people of Bengal, another ’71 looks obligatory for us.” Several other commenters joined in, saying “Inshallah”. So far, the post has drawn nearly 11,000 reactions and at least 900 comments. The post has also been shared more than 400 times.
Multiple Facebook pages (1, 2, 3), personal profiles (1, 2, 3, 4), and groups (1, 2, 3,4) posted the same photocard.
To verify the authenticity of the photocard, Dismislab checked the recent photocards and posts on the official BBC Bangla Facebook page, but found no such photocard or report on the outlet’s page.
Dismislab also contacted the news outlet, whose Editor Mir Sabbir confirmed that the photocard is fake.
In short, the photocard circulated in the name of BBC Bangla is fake. BBC Bangla did not publish any photocard carrying the message that the country will again become free of Razakars in December.
