Madaripur torchlight march video falsely shared as August 15 footage
A video circulating on Facebook has been used to claim that a march was held in Madaripur on August 15 in honor of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. However, a Dismislab fact-check found that the video actually shows a torchlight march held in Madaripur on August 12 in protest against the illegal extraction of sand.
The video was shared by a Facebook page called “Bangladesh Joy Bangla Sangram” with text overlaid on it saying, “Mujib is not just a name, Mujib is the name of a country. Mujib means Bangladesh. Today’s Madaripur.” The post’s caption said, “Today is August 15. Tonight in Madaripur, like and comment as much as possible.” Share to give everyone the opportunity to see. By the time this report was published, the video had been viewed around 2,300 times and shared 463 times.

To verify the claim, reverse image searches were conducted using several keyframes from the video. This led to a video report published on Jamuna Television’s YouTube channel. Published on August 12, 2026, the report was titled, “Torchlight march in Madaripur protesting illegal sand extraction.”
The footage from the 10-second to 33-second mark of the report published on Jamuna Television’s YouTube channel exactly matches the footage in the circulating video. In addition, the roadside pillars visible at the 54-second mark of the Jamuna Television report resemble those seen in the circulating video. Several people at the front of the march in the circulating video also match those seen in the report.

Keyword searches also found detailed reports on the incident published by Daiy Inqilab and Desh TV. The reports state that a torchlight march and protest rally were held in Madaripur against the illegal extraction of sand from various rivers in the district. The march began at the open stage beside Shakuni Lake in Madaripur town.
