Attack on Jamaat leader passed of as attack on BNP leader
A man wearing a bandage on his shoulder sits on a bed looking toward the camera, with several pillows around him. A recent post on Facebook shared this image and claimed that activists of Jamaat-e-Islami attacked the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader in Kurigram district. However, a fact-check by Dismislab found the claim to be false. Reports from news media identified the injured person as the Jamaat secretary of Rajarhat upazila in the northern district.
The photo was posted on February 14 from a personal Facebook profile named ‘Kather Kella’. The caption states, “Sudden attack by Jamaat activists on Rajarhat upazila BNP Secretary Advocate Alir Ahmed. Jamaat should control them with an iron hand. Otherwise, a major accident will happen.” The post circulated across multiple Facebook groups (1, 2, 3, 4).

A reverse image search led Dismislab to a Facebook post published on February 13 from another personal profile. In that caption, the poster wrote, “Sudden attack by BNP activists on Rajarhat upazila Jamaat Secretary Advocate Ahmad Ali. BNP should tackle its party terrorists strongly.” The image in that post exactly matches the circulated photo.
Further searches using relevant keywords found multiple reports in different media outlets (1, 2, 3, 4). A report by Star News states that miscreants hacked and injured Rajarhat upazila Jamaat Secretary Ahmad Ali in post-election violence in Kurigram. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on February 13 in Chetna village of Gharialdanga union in the upazila.

Reports say the injured person went to his father-in-law’s house on Thursday night (February 12) after the election. An argument over voting between one of his in-law’s and a local turned into a clash. The report adds that the local, Rokon, brought a sickle from his house and attacked Ahmad Ali from behind, injuring him. Neighbors claimed Rokon is a ward-level activist of Jubo Dal, BNP’s youth wing, in the Chetna area.
In short, the claim that the victim of the attack is a BNP leader is false. The injured man is a local Jamaat leader.
