A video recently spread on social media claimed to show a massive attack and vandalism in front of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court. However, Dismislab’s fact-check shows the incident took place on August 4, 2024, during the student uprising.

From August 25 this year several Facebook pages and profiles shared a 48-second video clip (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) with the same claim. The caption reads, “At this moment, massive attack and vandalism at Dhaka CMM Court. A Pakistani conspiracy is trying to turn the country into a terrorist state. Golden Bangladesh is on the verge of destruction!” Some posts included negative hashtags targeting the head adviser of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, such as “#StepDownFascistYunus.”

An analysis of a post sharing this claim reveals that it has been viewed over 18,000 times and shared nearly 400 times. In comment sections, mixed reactions appeared. Some users believed it to be true and wrote, “Pakistan-backed terrorists have destroyed the country. Golden Bangladesh is now begging. Wild Yunus, remove the tyrant government, save the country and the people.” Others identified the video as false, writing, “This news is completely misleading. The court attack happened on August 4, 2024. But it’s being presented as a recent event. False information is being spread to mislead people.”

The video shows crowds in front of the Dhaka CMM Court wielding sticks, running, and vandalizing police cars and prison vans.

Verification finds that the pages and profiles spreading the false claim belong to Awami League activists and supporters. They often post in favor of the party. Several profiles or cover photos feature Sheikh Mujibur Rahman or Sheikh Hasina. Some users identify themselves as leaders of the party’s affiliate organizations in their “About” section.

Dismislab ran several searches using various keywords of the post and found a shorts video on Channel 24’s verified YouTube channel published on August 4, 2024. The footage matches exactly with the one now circulating. The Channel 24 video description read, “Attack and vandalism at Dhaka CMM Court.” Other news outlets (1,2) also shared the same video that day. Further details appear in online reports from multiple media outlets (1,2,3,4).

A report published in the daily Samakal on August 4, 2024, stated that protesters broke into the CMM Court gate in Old Dhaka on the first day of a non-cooperation movement, demanding the resignation of Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet. They threw sticks, bricks, and stones.

So the video being spread as showing recent attacks on CMM court is false.
