Photos Circulated Claiming to Show DU Faculty Monami are AI-Generated and Altered

Several pictures are being spread on Facebook from multiple pages, profiles, and groups claiming to be of Shehreen Amin Bhuiyan Monami, Assistant Professor of the Public Administration Department of Dhaka University. However, Dismislab’s fact-check found that the photos are either edited or created with artificial intelligence (AI).

AI-Generated Photos in Red-White Swimsuit

Recently, several Facebook pages, profiles, and groups (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) shared photos claiming to show DU teacher Monami. Four pictures, all in the same outfit but different poses, circulated widely. They show a woman smiling at the seaside, wearing a red-and-white floral swimsuit. One post’s caption reads: “Monami Madam with Jamaat-Shibir ideals!” The same photos circulated on Instagram under her name as well.

Dismislab’s verification found several inconsistencies in the photos.

Each of the four pictures carries a white logo of Gemini-AI of Google at the lower right corner, a mark seen when images are created or edited using Google’s AI chatbot.

Closer inspection reveals more inconsistencies:

• None of the outfits’ prints match. The floral and leaf patterns differ in each photo.
• The swimsuit’s back strap appears differently, missing in one image and tied in another.
• The hand ornaments vary from picture to picture.
• The hairstyle and facial appearance differ between the first and fourth photos.
• In three photos, the sea behind her looks static, with waves in the same position. That is unnatural for genuine hand-taken photos.

A review of the faculty’s Facebook profile finds no trace of these images.

All these inconsistencies indicate the pictures are not real; they were generated using artificial intelligence.

Fake Photos Made by Altered Faces onto Others’ Images

Several other Facebook pages and personal profiles circulated two different pictures (1, 2, 3, 4), (1, 2, 3, 4) also claiming to show the DU teacher. The caption of a post reads: “If your heart doesn’t cry for Monami Madam’s insult, you’re not a true Dhaka University student, you’re an enemy of DU … ’’.

Dismislab’s verification shows the photos are not of Monami. Images of two different women were collected from social media, then edited by replacing their faces to create the viral photos. When the circulated images were reverse-searched after removing the facial portions, Dismislab found two separate Instagram accounts belonging to different women.

One, under the username its_munmun134, posted on September 6 with 10 attached photos. The third image in that post matches, except for the face, with the one spread in Monami’s name.

Another account, symavermaaa, posted eight photos on September 2. Two of those match exactly, except for the face with the other viral images.

Hence, the photos promoted in the name of Shehreen Amin Bhuiyan (Monami) are also edited.

Notably, the DU faculty filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station under the Cyber ​​Security Act on November 3 due to the dissemination of these distorted and altered photos on Facebook.
