Old video circulated claiming garment worker tied to tree to prevent protest participation
A video recently posted on Facebook claims that a woman garment worker was tied to a tree to ensure that she could not join the ongoing protest. One claim states that a leader of Chhatra Dal in Kaliakair upazila tied the woman. However, Dismislab’s fact-check found that the circulated video is approximately three months old and of a different incident. The footage is of a woman being tied up in Mymensingh in August 2026 over an allegation of killing her mother-in-law.
The 9-second video, which shows a woman tied to a tree, was posted on November 2 from a page named “Daily Amader Sangbad”. The post reads, “They tied the woman to a tree like this for participating in the workers’ movement; see details in the video.”
As of the publication of this report, the video had been viewed more than 18,000 times and shared 62 times. There were more than 200 reactions to the video.
From another page named “Gopalganj Insiders”, the same video was posted, with the description reading, “For going to join the movement, Al Amin Dewan, member secretary of Kaliakair Upazila Chhatra Dal, tied a woman garment worker to a tree.”
The same video was posted from multiple personal Facebook profiles (1, 2) and was circulated with the claim that the woman was tied up to prevent her from joining the movement.
In the course of the investigation, a reverse image search was conducted using keyframes from the video. This led Dismislab to find a video report published on August 18, 2026, from the Facebook page of “Daily Jibon Jatra,” which identifies itself as a news outlet. The report’s description states, “In Bariyakanda village of No. 7 Shakuai Union in Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh, a son and daughter-in-law have been accused of beating their mother and leaving her in a paddy field.” (verbatim) A similarity was found between the scenes of the 2-minute-29-second video and the circulating video.

For further details, relevant keyword searches found reports on the incident published by multiple news outlets (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). According to information obtained from a Prothom Alo report, on August 17 of this year, during an argument over land in Haluaghat, Mymensingh, a woman named Rezia Khatun (82) died after falling to the ground after being pushed by her son. In connection with this incident, police detained her son Dulal Mia and daughter-in-law Hosne Ara for questioning.

In other words, the video circulated with the claim that a woman was tied to a tree to prevent her from joining the ongoing workers’ protest is misleading. The actual footage is from a different incident in Mymensingh that took place nearly three months ago.
Notably, garment factory workers have been protesting for several days, demanding that the minimum monthly wage be raised to Tk30,000.
