Video of Sanatani procession spread with ‘Sheikh Hasina’ slogan added
A video has recently spread on Facebook claiming that during a torch procession in Dhaka, the streets turned tumultuous with slogans invoking the name of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, Dismislab’s fact-check has found that during this procession — held on June 19 in the capital’s Shahbagh, organized by “Oikyobaddho Sanatani Samaj, Bangladesh” (United Sanatani Society, Bangladesh) in protest against the spread of religiously offensive content — no slogan invoking the former prime minister’s name was heard.
A Facebook page claiming to be a media outlet, named Dainik Sangbadchitro, posted a 13-second video on July 21. In the video, a massive procession carrying torches can be seen, with the slogan “Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Hasina” heard being chanted. The caption of the post reads, “Ut-ta-l rajpath (the streets turn tumultuous) with the slogan of Sheikh Hasina.”
By the time this report was published, the post had been shared approximately 750 times, and the video had been viewed more than 43,000 times. In the comments, one person wrote, “I suppose there’s no way to stop it now. Day by day, all the people are seething and rising up, taking to the streets.” On the other hand, some are commenting that the video is from India.
Conducting a reverse image search using keyframes from the video, Dismislab found a video report published on a YouTube channel named Daily Journal. At 3 minutes 59 seconds of the video published on Daily Journal’s YouTube channel, the same clapping and hand-waving can be seen. The people in the report, including their clothing, and the scenes of the torch procession match the scenes in the recently circulated video.
In this video, published on June 30, 2026, multiple slogans can be seen being chanted, such as — “Jwalo re jwalo, agun jwalo” (Burn, oh burn, light the fire), “Kothay kothay Bangla chhar, Bangla ki tor bap-dadar” (At every turn you say leave Bangladesh, is Bangladesh your father’s or grandfather’s property), “Amar mati amar ma, ei desh chharbo na” (My soil, my mother, I will not leave this country), “Jongibader astana, bhenge dao, guriye dao” (Break down, raze the den of militancy), “Jago re jago, sanatani jago” (Awaken, oh awaken, Sanatanis awaken). However, in the video, the participants in the procession are not heard chanting a slogan of “Sheikh Hasina.”
A search using relevant keywords found news reports on this event published by multiple news outlets (1, 2, 3). These reports reveal that the procession was held on June 19 in the capital’s Shahbagh, organized by “Oikyobaddho Sanatani Samaj, Bangladesh” (United Sanatani Society, Bangladesh), in protest against the spread of religiously offensive content.
That is to say, in the video circulated with the claim that the streets turned tumultuous with slogans in the name of Sheikh Hasina, slogans from a different event have been added. No such slogan was found in the video of the original event.
