Fake letter claims Jamaat supporting ongoing movement in India
Using an image of a letter attributed to Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Indian news media and social media are claiming that the party has expressed full support for the ongoing student movement in the neighbouring country. However, Dismislab’s fact-check has found that the image was created using artificial intelligence (AI). Jamaat, Bangladesh’s main opposition party, has also condemned the spread of the forged letter under its name in a post, demanding an end to the malicious campaign.
Indian media outlet Republic World, in a report published on July 21, disseminated an image of a letter from Jamaat-e-Islami expressing support for the ongoing movement in India. In its report, Republic wrote — The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has issued a formal letter expressing “full and unconditional solidarity” with the student movement associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi prompting concerns over foreign interference in India’s internal affairs.”
The same image was also circulated by Indian media outlets News X Live and News18. News X Live, in the description of their 4-minute-10-second video report, wrote, “Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami extends support to the ongoing CJP student protest in India, with its statement triggering political discussions over the movement and external backing.”
News18‘s report was headlined, “Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami Sent ‘Support Letter’ To Delhi Protesters? Exclusive From Intel Sources.” However, the report stated that intelligence agencies were verifying the authenticity of the letter.
The Telugu-based news media outlet MyIndMedia, posting the image of the letter on their Facebook page, wrote, “Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed support for the ongoing CJP movement in India.” The media and public relations center VSK (Vishwa Samvada Kendra) Telangana’s report was headlined, “Support for the Cockroach Party from a ‘Terrorist Organization of Bangladesh.'” The report included Jamaat’s letter as an attachment.
Meanwhile, an outlet identifying itself as a news media organization, Kolkata Twenty Four Seven, posted a card on their Facebook page. The card read, “The mask has come off Sonam and the cockroaches! Jamaat supports the student movement by writing a letter.” The comments section contained a link to the original report. This report, published on July 21, carried the same wording in its headline, with only the word “so-called” added before “movement.”
Describing this movement as one where “foreign funding and foreign instigation have been proven,” the report stated, “Proving that suspicion true, this letter from Jamaat has now made it clear that these cockroaches are trying to bake their own bread in the fire of this so-called student movement, and they further suspect that involvement of the ISI behind this is also not impossible.”
The same image has been circulated on Facebook, as well as on Instagram and from multiple accounts on X (1, 2, 3, 4). An X account named Voice of Hindus, operated from the United States, posted the image on July 21 at 10:08am Bangladesh time. The post read, “Breaking: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has officially expressed solidarity with the student protests in India. All Hindus in India must unite against this international conspiracy. If not, Indian Hindus will suffer the same persecution that Hindus are enduring in Bangladesh today. Wake up before it’s too late! “
Upon observation, some inconsistencies can be noticed in the circulated image. The party’s name is misspelled in the letter’s logo. Moreover, the logo displayed in it does not resemble Jamaat-e-Islami’s current logo. The letter contains no official or registered address, and no memo number is provided — elements that are typically found in official correspondence issued by this party. Comparing it with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s older letters, it was found that the format and letterhead design differ.
Additionally, certain distortions in a portion of the text within the letter suggest the possibility that the image was AI-generated or digitally created. Dismislab verified the image using multiple AI content detection tools. Sightengine identified it as 99% AI. Was It AI reported that this image, or portions of it, may have been created using artificial intelligence (AI). The AI detection tool Hive Moderation reported a 93.7% probability that the image was AI-generated.
No letter regarding the student movement in India could be found on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s official website or on their verified Facebook page. However, on their X handle, the party condemned this fake letter circulating on social media and demanded an immediate end to the malicious propaganda. Clarifying their position regarding the ongoing movement in India, they stated, “It is the longstanding and firm policy of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami not to interfere in the domestic or internal affairs of any country. This principle is foundational to our conduct in regional and international affairs, and we have never deviated from it. So, the position, stated in the forged letter is entirely inconsistent with our established policy.”
In other words, the claim that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expressed support through a letter for the ongoing student movement in India is not correct. The letter seen in the image was created using AI.
