A video has spread on Facebook with the claim that BNP activists publicly beat a trader to death in front of his house at Karwan Bazar in the capital for protesting extortion. However, Dismislab’s fact-check shows that the original video is from Delhi, India. On August 29 this year, a group of visitors beat a temple attendant to death at Kalkaji Mandir in southeast Delhi over a dispute related to prasad. Footage of that incident is now being circulated with a claim that it is from Bangladesh.

On December 29, a video was posted from a personal Facebook profile with the caption, “BNP terrorists publicly beat a trader to death in front of his house at Karwan Bazar in the capital for protesting extortion. This trader had participated in a human chain today. Later in the evening, BNP terrorists beat him to death in front of the gate of his house.”

The video has been shared more than 7,200 times and viewed over 4,25,000 times so far.

Multiple personal Facebook profiles (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) shared the video with the same claim. In the 11-second video, a group of people can be seen beating a person lying on the road with sticks.

To verify the claim, Dismislab conducted a reverse image search using different keyframes from the video. This led to a report published on August 30, 2025, by the Indian media outlet Times of India. The headline read, “Delhi shocked: Kalkaji temple servitor beaten to death over ‘chunni prasad’ dispute.” The first 11 seconds of the 2-minute-24-second video used in that report exactly match the video being circulated.

The report stated, “Police said that during a dispute over ‘chunni prasad’, a group of visitors beat a servitor of the Kalkaji temple in southeast Delhi to death. The victim, Yogendra Singh, 35, had been serving at the temple for nearly 15 years and was originally from Fatehpur in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh. A PCR call about the attack was received at 9:30 pm on Friday. Police found that Yogendra Singh had been attacked by multiple people with sticks and fists. He was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre but later died.”

Previously, when this video was circulated on social media with a claim that it was from Bangladesh, a Bangladesh-based fact-checking organization, Rumor Scanner, published a fact-check report on the matter. Dismislab has also published multiple fact-check reports in the past on Indian videos being circulated with claims that they are from Bangladesh.

Notably, on Monday, December 29, traders formed a human chain at Karwan Bazar in Dhaka to protest against extortionists. When “outsiders” attacked the traders there, several traders were injured. Later, the traders resisted the attackers with sticks.
