
Old video of robbery attempt in India shared as evidence of rising crime in Bangladesh
A video has been circulated on Facebook with the claim that due to the deterioration of the law and order situation in Bangladesh, people are no longer safe even inside their own homes. However, verification has found that the video is not from Bangladesh; it shows CCTV footage recorded during an attempted robbery at a house in Amritsar, Punjab, India, in 2024.
On September 23, the video was posted by a Facebook profile named “Md K Islam Sumon”. The post said, “Crime is increasing in the country at a rapid pace due to unemployment, rising prices, the inactivity of a demoralized and legally unprotected law enforcement force, and the utter failure of an inexperienced government. The situation has now reached a point where people no longer feel safe even in their own homes.” Text inside the video read, “Robbers at the door, the entire family was saved by the mother’s intelligence.”
In the video, a woman is seen holding a door shut. Someone on the other side was pushing against the door and trying to open it. As she shouted, the woman held the door closed and then pulled a sofa in front of it.
As of the publication of this report, the post had been shared more than 200 times. The video had been viewed more than 68,000 times.
A logo bearing the name “Ajker Prottasha” was visible at the top of the video. The same video was found on the Facebook page of “Ajker Prottasha.” The post, published at 9:55pm. on September 22, carried the caption, “The entire family was saved by the mother’s intelligence.”
A reverse image search using various keyframes from the video yielded multiple news reports published in October 2024. In a report published on October 2, 2024, by Indian news outlet “India Today,” the incident was identified as an attempted robbery at a house in the Verka area of Amritsar.
The report said that a woman who had gone to the rooftop to dry clothes saw three masked youths outside the house. Later, when one of them attempted to enter the house by climbing over the wall, the woman closed the door and held it shut as the person pushed against it. She then moved a sofa in front of the door and alerted the members of her family.
In a report published on October 2, 2024, Indian news outlet “Aaj Tak” said that three men attempted to rob the home of a jeweler in Verka, Amritsar, during the daytime. A female member of the household, Manpreet, prevented them from entering the house. The three men later fled the scene. The report also mentioned that police had filed a case and begun an investigation. Dismislab also found several other news reports (1, 2) about the same incident. Several news outlets also published video reports (1, 2) about the incident. In all cases, the video was reported to have been recorded during an attempted robbery at a house in Punjab.

Therefore, an old video of an attempted robbery in India is being circulated as evidence of the recent crime situation in Bangladesh.
