A video showing the recovery of cash-filled safes and sacks has been circulating on social media, with claims that it was recovered from the house of National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Samanta Sharmin. However, verification shows that the video is more than five years old and actually depicts the recovery of money from the home of an Awami League leader. The same video was also shared in 2022 with the false claim that it showed money recovery from another Awami League leader’s house, which was debunked in fact-check reports at the time.

On the morning of August 10, 2025, several Facebook users (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) began sharing that old video with a false claim linking the NCP leader. Verification indicates that all these users are Awami League supporters, with some displaying photos of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina as their profile or cover images, while others have previously posted in support of the Awami League.

The 1:41 minute video shared by these users shows law enforcement officers retrieving cash and gold ornaments from the locker of a house. A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officer is seen briefing the media on the recovery. In some segments, synthetically inserted images and videos show Samanta Sharmin delivering speeches. In the voice-over, a man says, “This time, four safes and sacks of money were found at the house of NCP leader Samanta Sharmin. She has turned her home into a bank. NCP leader Samanta Sharmin is now on a five-day remand…”

The Bangla caption of the Facebook post read, “Sacks of money found at the home of MCP leader Samanta Sharmin. The corruption of NCP leaders and activists has surpassed that of all past parties, reaching sky-high levels through corruption and extortion.” (Original spelling retained)

At the very end of the video, a logo reading “Bijoy Shorts YT” appears. Following this lead, Dismislab traced a YouTube channel that posted the exact same video on the night of August 9, 2025, a day before it began circulating on Facebook. Titled “Sacks and 4 safes full of cash found at NCP leader’s house; home turned into a money bank! Awami League.” The video has since been viewed nearly 50,000 times.

To verify the claim, Dismislab conducted a keyframe-based reverse image search, which led to a video report on the official YouTube channel of news outlet Bangla Vision. Published on February 25, 2020, that report contains identical footage of parts of the video now circulating on social media. The current clip was made by stitching together segments from the Bangla Vision report. According to the original report, during an anti-corruption drive, RAB raided the home of Awami League leaders Enamul Haque Enu and Rupon Bhuiyan—arrested over a casino operation case— and seized BDT 265.5 million in cash.

The fake video was created by cutting and editing different parts from Bangla Vision’s video report

A reverse image search also led Dismislab to a fact-check report on the same video footage. In 2022, the clip had been circulated, claiming that it showed the recovery of cash from the home of Awami League leader and former Member of Parliament Shamim Osman. At the time, Boom Bangladesh published a report stating that the claim was false.

The same footage has now been re-edited and is being circulated, falsely linking NCP leader Samanta Sharmin.
