A video of an attempted mugging has been posted on the social media platform Facebook, while suggesting that it depicts an incident in Bangladesh. However, Dismislab’s fact-check has found that the video is not from Bangladesh, but rather shows an attempt to snatch a woman’s bag in Uttar Pradesh, India.

The video was posted on September 29 from a Facebook page named “Faceless Democracy “. The 29-second video shows two individuals on a motorcycle passing by a woman. The person seated behind attempts to snatch the bag from the woman’s hand. However, the attempt fails in the face of the woman’s resistance. The post’s description reads, “Have you ever seen such an unsafe country before?”

As of the publication of this report, the video had been viewed more than 54,000 times and shared more than 450 times. Users reacted to the post more than 1,200 times. Although the video did not explicitly state that the incident took place in Bangladesh, an analysis of the comments shows that multiple commenters assumed it was from Bangladesh. One user wrote, “Bravo, new Bangladesh, we will see many more new things,” while another commented, “Bonglaladesh of July” (verbatim)

During the investigation, a relevant keyword search led to a video report published on May 17 on the verified Facebook page of the Indian news outlet The Times of India. The on-screen text of the video reads, “45-year-old UP woman fights snatched for 23 minutes; 2 arrested after encounter.” This 33-second video was found to be an exact match with the circulating video.

These reports reveal that on May 6, 2026, in the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, a 45-year-old woman named Anita Devi fought with two snatchers for approximately 23 minutes. Despite the snatchers’ assault, she did not let go of her bag. It is reported that after the video spread on social media, police reviewed CCTV camera footage and arrested the accused.
