A video of a young man tied up with a rope has recently been shared on Facebook, claiming he was a leader of Bangladesh Students’ League (BSL) from Jamalpur. However, fact-check shows that the video is more than one and a half years old, and that the body belonged to a security guard from Chandpur.

Multiple Facebook users (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) shared the video with the same claim since August 24. The verified Facebook page of former BSL general secretary Golam Rabbani also shared the video with the same claim.

One of these video posts received 70,000 views and has been shared more than 1000 times. The description of this post reads, “The tied-up body of a missing BSL leader was found on the roof of Krishi Bank in Gojra Bazar, Jamalpur. The boy was from an Awami League family and was a college unit BSL leader. He was strangled with a rope and tied to a pillar before being killed. Fascist Yunus must go, save the country.” The post also added the hashtag “#StepDownFascistYounus.” In the 30-second video, a tied-up body is seen being recovered from the roof of a building.

A keyframe search shows that the same video was uploaded on February 25, 2024, from a personal Facebook profile. The description states, “In Gojra Bazar under Gojra Union of Matlab Uttar Upazila, Chandpur, the dead body of a young man named Shahadat Hossain was found tied to a pillar on the roof of Krishi Bank. I demand that those involved in this brutal murder be quickly brought under the law and properly punished.” On the same date, the video was posted from multiple Facebook profiles (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), groups (1, 2, 3), and pages (1, 2, 3).

Multiple news media (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) also published reports about the incident. In a report published on February 25, 2024, Prothom Alo said that the tied-up body of the night guard of the Krishi Bank office in the Gojra Bazar area of Matlab Uttar Upazila, Chandpur, was recovered from the roof. Quoting the police, the report said the incident may have happened due to previous enmity. However, in the reports published about this incident, nowhere was the victim’s political involvement mentioned, nor was it suggested that the death could have been caused by political conflict.

In other words, the video being spread is not from Jamalpur, but from Chandpur. Also, the video is one and a half years old and of a different incident, which is being shared with a false claim as being recent.
