Cash seizure footage falsely shared as Samantha Sharmin home raid
A video has been circulating on Facebook with the claim that sacks and trunks full of cash were seized from the home of NCP leader Samantha Sharmin. However, a Dismislab fact-check found the claim to be false. The footage shows cash being seized from the homes of two former Awami League leaders who were arrested during an anti-casino crackdown in 2020.
On September 18, a 6-second video was posted from a Facebook profile with the caption, “Look at the July militants looting the people’s money and sending it abroad.” The video shows sacks and trunks filled with cash being seized. A photo of NCP Senior Joint Convener Samantha Sharmin has been added in one corner of the video. In a narration-style voiceover, a man can be heard saying, “Bag full of cash seized from NCP leader Samantha Sharmin’s home.” Until the publication of this report, the video had been viewed nearly 90,000 times and shared more than 700 times.
The video was also found posted from multiple Facebook profiles (1, 2, 3).
A reverse image search using keyframes from the video led to a video published on August 16, 2025, on the YouTube channel of Daily Ittefaq. The portion from the beginning of the video through the sixth second exactly matches the video circulating on Facebook. However, the Ittefaq report then says, “Such a fake video was circulated on social media.” This part was cut from the video being circulated.
Citing fact-checking organization Fact-Watch, the Ittefaq report said that on February 25, 2020, cash was seized from the homes of two expelled Awami League leaders, Enamul Haque Enu and Rupom Bhuiyan. The fake video was created by using a clip from footage of that incident and adding a photo of Samantha Sharmin.
A keyword search for details about the cash seizure found multiple reports (1, 2, 3) published by news outlets. A report published in the online edition of Jugantor on February 26, 2020, said that during a raid on the homes of Enamul Haque Enu and Rupom Bhuiyan, two former Awami League leaders arrested in the casino scandal, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) seized nearly Tk270 million. In addition to cash arranged in five trunks, documents related to fixed deposit receipts (FDRs), foreign currency and gold jewelry were also recovered.
In other words, a clipped portion of a Daily Ittefaq video based on a report by Fact-Watch is being circulated to falsely claim that cash was seized from the home of NCP leader Samantha Sharmin.
