A video has circulated on multiple social media platforms claiming that one of the attackers of Osman Sharif Hadi, an aspirant from the Dhaka-8 constituency, has been arrested. However, a fact-check shows the video is from September 24, about three months before the shooting. The old video actually shows the arrest of Arafat Islam Khan Sagar, president of the banned Chhatra League unit of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, from Dhaka.

In the video recently spread on Facebook, a man is heard saying, “Good news! Good news! Good news! Finally, one of the attackers of Osman Hadi has been arrested. Viewers, you can already see on the screen. This is one of those who attacked Hadi.” The video has been viewed more than 117,000 times and shared more than 1,300 times so far.

One commenter wrote, “At least say which party he belongs to before calling it good news.” Another wrote, “They should be shot on the spot wherever they are caught.”

The same video with the same claim has also spread on YouTube, drawing more than 600,000 views.

A reverse image search using keyframes revealed multiple media reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) about the incident. The exact same video was also found on the Facebook page of a media outlet named Sangbad TV. RTV and Banglavision, which also ran reports on the incident, wrote in their captions, “A banned Student’s League leader arrested from Farmgate.”

According to the reports, the video is from September 24, 2025. After attempts by the banned Awami League party and its affiliated organizations to hold flash processions in different parts of Dhaka, police carried out operations and detained 244 people. During that time, Sagar was detained while trying to flee with a Chinese axe-like weapon. Police said he was suspected of being a mugger.

On September 25, the verified Facebook page of Bangladesh Student’s League shared the same video and wrote, “While fighting on the streets against the occupying forces in the uncompromising struggle to restore democracy, Arafat Islam Khan Sagar, president of Patuakhali Science and Technology University Student’s League, became a victim of a Jamaat-BNP mob and was arrested by police.” Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson for Inquilab Moncho and an independent candidate for the February election from Dhaka-8, was shot in the capital’s Bijoynagar area on December 12. He is currently receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. Media reports say he is still not out of danger. Reports also say that three people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident.
