On July 12, several old videos were circulated on social media throughout the day, falsely claiming that activists from the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Jamaat-Shibir had attacked and set fire to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) offices in Dhaka, Cumilla, Jessore and Jhenaidah. Dismislab verified five of the videos allegedly showing attacks on BNP offices and found they were not recent. The misleading footage was shared amid protests following the death of scrap trader Sohag in front of Mitford Hospital in Dhaka.

Old video shared claiming fire at BNP offices in Cumilla and Dhaka

One such video circulating on social media (1, 2, 3, 4) claimed that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir activists set fire to the BNP office in Cumilla. However, verification shows the footage is not recent; it dates back to May 17, 2025. On that day, BNP activists who had been denied party positions staged a protest in the Kandirpar area of Cumilla and later set fire to the unused office of the party’s South District and Metropolitan units on Victoria College Road.

Clips from this video also appeared in a Somoy TV report on May 18. A detailed report on the incident was also published in Prothom Alo.

The same video was also circulated with a different claim— that ordinary citizens set fire to the BNP’s central metropolitan office in Dhaka in protest of Sohag’s killing (1, 2).

Video from 2024 falsely shared as vandalism at BNP office in Jhenaidah

Another video (1, 2) circulated on social media claimed that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir activists vandalized and set fire to a BNP office in Kaliganj, Jhenaidah. However, verification confirms the video is not recent.

Correspondents from the daily Kaler Kantho and Kalbela in Jhenaidah confirmed to Dismislab that the footage is old. Aritra Kundu, Jhenaidah correspondent for Kaler Kantho, told Dismislab that after viewing the video, he visited the site and found no evidence of vandalism or fire damage. He later spoke with local BNP activists and law enforcement officials, who informed that the video was recorded on August 4, 2024, during a student-led protest, and that the incident involved an attack by a pro-Awami League group.

On July 12, Aritra Kundu also provided Dismislab with a current photograph of the office, which shows no signs of damage. This information was corroborated by Mahmud Hasan Tipu, bureau chief of Kalbela in Jhenaidah.

According to media reports, on August 4, 2024, Awami League activists attacked and set fire to the BNP office on Thana Road in Kaliganj town. Following the incident, a case was filed with the local police station naming 94 Awami League activists as accused.

Old video from Lalmonirhat shared as attack in Jessore

Another video (1, 2, 3) was circulated on social media claiming that a BNP office in Jessore was set on fire in front of hundreds of people. However, verification shows that the video is not from Jessore, but was actually filmed during an attack on a BNP leader’s office in Lalmonirhat in October 2023. The original video can be found on the YouTube channel of “Lalmoni Post,” a local news outlet based in Lalmonirhat district.

Further verification confirms that on October 29, 2023, the personal office of BNP leader Asadul Habib Dulu, located on Mission Road in Lalmonirhat, was attacked and vandalized. Multiple news reports (1, 2) from the time provide detailed accounts and images of the incident.

Eviction drive video from Khilkhet shared with false claim of attack

Another video was widely circulated on social media, claiming that ordinary citizens had launched coordinated attacks on BNP offices across the country. The specific video (1, 2, 3, 4) was shared with the false claim that the main BNP office under the Khilkhet Police Station in Dhaka had been demolished.

However, verification reveals that the original video was published on June 26, 2025, on the YouTube channel of Jago News. According to the title and description of the video, it was not a public attack but part of a joint-forces operation.

On June 26, an eviction drive took place near the Khilkhet Railgate area, during which members of law enforcement agencies were present.

In short, this video is also not from today, and is at least two weeks old.

Nine-month-old Video falsely shared as fire at BNP office in Rupganj, Narayanganj

Another video (1, 2) circulated on social media claimed that a BNP office in Rupganj, Narayanganj had been set on fire. A Facebook page named Muktibahini shared a clip from a media report originally aired by Ekattor TV, presenting it as recent footage of the incident. However, verification shows that the original report was published on Oct. 8, 2024, confirming the video is not recent.

On July 9, scrap dealer Sohag was brutally killed—beaten and hacked to death—on the road in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka. In response, Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal announced the permanent expulsion of four individuals from the party. Following the killing, protests and rallies were held in various parts of the country on July 12. It is in this context that multiple old videos were circulated, falsely suggesting that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked BNP offices out of public outrage.
