Kashmir video claimed as NCP attack in Habiganj
A video has been circulated on the social media platform Facebook claiming that people of the NCP and Jamaat-Shibir are carrying out an attack targeting the residence of Habiganj-3 constituency MP GK Gouse. However, a fact-check by Dismislab reveals that the original video is of an incident in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
A video was posted from a Facebook profile on July 29 with the caption, “For a while now, the situation in Habiganj has been terrible. Boys of NCP and Jamaat-Shibir are attacking to vandalize the residence of Habiganj-3 constituency MP GK Gouse.” In the 19-second video, several motorcycles are seen scattered across a road, and several individuals are moving around a police vehicle.
Till the publication of this report, the video has been viewed more than 161,000 times and shared more than 700 times. Furthermore, the video has been seen posted with the same claim from multiple Facebook profiles (1, 2, 3, 4). The video was also posted from an Instagram profile with the same claim.
The logo of Jagoron News is seen in the top right corner of the video. The video was posted from the Facebook page of Jagoron News on 29 July. The caption of the video read, “12 Pakistanis k*il*le*d in police sh*oot*ing in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir.”
Conducting a reverse image search using a frame of the video yielded a report by the India-based media outlet Aaj Tak. The translation of the headline of the report published on July 28 stands as, “Bullets firing, people fleeing in all directions, extreme panic on the streets… see proof of Pakistani atrocities in PoK – Video.” Some portions of the video used in this report perfectly match the circulated video. The report states, “Security forces fired on a peaceful protest in Mirpur of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, in which several people have been injured. Some reports indicate that 50 more civilians have been injured and there are fears that the death toll or casualties could be higher. In videos from the scene, dozens of motorcycles are seen overturned on the streets, vehicles scattered haphazardly, and people seen fleeing in all directions.”
That is to say, a video of a shooting in Pakistan’s Kashmir is being circulated with the claim of an NCP attack in Habiganj.
It is to be noted that on July 28, the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) organized a rally in front of the Town Hall in Habiganj city. Around 7pm in the city’s Staff Quarter area, leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal (student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party) attacked the motorcade of NCP’s Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari and Chief Organizer (Northern region) Sarjis Alam.
