Jugantor presents old helicopter crash footage as recent
A video posted by the news outlet Jugantor recently claimed that a helicopter had crashed in Greece, killing all those on board. However, a Dismislab fact-check found that three of the clips used in the report were from older incidents. Jugantor did not label the footage as archival.
On August 18, Jugantor’s YouTube channel posted a 1 minute 36 second video. The post was captioned, “Helicopter crashes in Greece, all passengers killed.” At the beginning of the video, a helicopter is seen crashing into the sea. The same footage appears in multiple parts of the video. At the time of publication of this report, the video had been viewed more than 130,000 times.
Jugantor’s Facebook page also posted the same video with the same headline. At the time of publication of this report, the video had been viewed 146,000 times and shared nearly 100 times. The news outlet also published a report about the same incident on its own website.
In its investigation, Dismislab conducted a reverse image search using keyframes from the video. This led to a report published on CNN US’s website on February 22, 2016. The report, titled “Pearl Harbor helicopter crash teen dies,” included a video whose 9-second footage exactly matches the scene in Jugantor’s video showing the helicopter crashing into the water. Multiple news reports (1, 2) show that the incident occurred at Pearl Harbor in the US state of Hawaii. The helicopter, carrying five people, crashed into the sea. A teenager who was injured in the crash later died while undergoing treatment.
A reverse image search using another keyframe from the video led to another report published by CBS News. The report, published on August 13, 2026, was titled “2 soldiers killed in Apache helicopter crash in Texas.” Footage from 48 seconds into that video matches the helicopter crash scene at the 40-second mark of Jugantor’s published video. The report said that an Army Apache helicopter crashed during training in Texas, killing two crew members, and that a fire broke out at the crash site.
The footage showing two helicopters colliding in the air at the 1 minute 14 second mark of Jugantor’s video matches footage included in a report published by NBC News on August 4, 2026. The report said that two firefighting helicopters collided head-on in the air while fighting wildfires in Greece, killing two servicemen.
However, photographs from the recent helicopter crash in Greece were used at the 35-second and 52-second marks of Jugantor’s video.
On August 22, 2026, The Mirror US published a report titled “Young newlyweds killed in tragic helicopter crash while on dream honeymoon in Greece.” The photographs included in the report match scenes in Jugantor’s published video. The report said that last Monday (August 17), a private helicopter carrying a British newlywed couple lost control while landing on the island of Sifnos in the Aegean Sea, killing the couple and the pilot.
Therefore, Jugantor’s video, which circulated with the caption that a helicopter had crashed in Greece, killing everyone on board, has been edited. The video was created by cutting together footage from multiple unrelated incidents.
