Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BAGCHAS) leader Shyamoli Sultana Jadni had mocked Abdul Hannan Masud, senior joint chief coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP), on a Facebook post. Out of spite for that post, the NCP leader “forcibly” married Jadni – this claim, accompanied by screenshots, has gone viral on social media recently.

However, Dismislab’s fact-check shows the screenshot circulated as Jadni’s post is edited, and she made no such comment. Jadni made a rather positive post about Hannan on June 11, 2025, in a different context, which is now being misused to spread  false information.

On September 20, several Facebook profiles posted multiple screenshots (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) spreading the disinformation. One screenshot shows that a photo of Hannan Masud had been posted from Jadni’s account on June 11 this year. The caption reads, “Shala beggar’s child! Last year, I saw you drinking water from a bottle like a beggar by the roadside. And now such big lectures? Fakir’s son!” Another picture shows a screenshot of Jadni’s profile, with her photo and nearly 19,000 followers.

Another post reads, “Two months ago, Masud’s bride’s Facebook status; later, from spite, he forcibly married that girl..” The post  was shared over 700 times at the time of writing this report.

To verify the authenticity of the screenshot, Dismisslab checked the original posts on Jadni’s Facebook account and found a post on June 11 this year that mentions Hannan Masud. The attached photo of Hannan Masud, the date of the post, and the cover photo on the profile matched fully. However, the caption in that post does not match the abusive description seen in the circulated screenshot.

In the original photo, a bloodstained Hannan Masud is seen sitting with a bottle of water in his hand. The accompanying caption reads, “You people are denying the leadership of Hannan Masud, questioning his being shot, and mocking him. What you should have done instead is to oust those responsible for the shooting.”

Verification also shows Shyamoli Sultana Jadni does not have 19,000 followers, as claimed in the fake screenshot. Further, the original did not  mock Hannan Masud as a “beggar.” This means,  Jadni’s June 11 post was edited and then used to create the screenshot to spread this false claim.

To verify the post, Dismislab contacted Jadni. She told, she did not make the post attributed to her in the screenshot, and the claim of being forcibly married was not correct.

On September 18, Abdul Hannan Masud got engaged to Shyamoli Sultana Jadni. Various false claims involving the two have been circulating on social media since then.
