Indian youth marries mother-in-law, video spread claiming him to be Jamaat leader
A photo card showing the logo of the news outlet Bangla TV was recently circulated on Facebook. The card claims that a young leader of Jamaat-e-Islami (an Islamist political party) has divorced his wife and married his mother-in-law. However, a fact-check by Dismislab reveals that this claim was being spread by editing a Bangla TV photo card regarding an Indian incident.
On June 9, a photo card was posted from a personal Facebook profile. The caption of the post read, “The leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami are walking on the path to Jannah (paradise).” Inside the photo card, it was written, “A young leader of Jamaat divorced his wife and married his mother-in-law.”
In the middle of the photo card is the logo of Bangla TV, and the date is mentioned to be June 9, 2026. The address of Bangla TV’s website is given at the bottom of the photo card. Up until the writing of this report, the post has been shared 220 times, and more than 1,200 reactions have been seen. Analysing the comments reveals that many have assumed the news to be true and shared their own opinions. One user commented, “Jamaat means fraudster.” Another commented, “Jamaatis can do anything, under the guise of Islam ——.”
The photo card was shared with the same claim from multiple Facebook profiles and pages (1, 2, 3). To confirm the authenticity of the photo card, Dismislab verified the photo cards and posts from June 9 on Bangla TV’s official Facebook page and website. On June 9, a photo card was found on the official Facebook page of Bangla TV, which matches the circulated photo card. In this photo card, although the photo of the woman remains the same, a different photo of the man is seen. Furthermore, inside the photo card, it was written, “The youth divorced his wife and married his mother-in-law.”
A written report regarding this was found in the comments of this post. The headline of the report, published on June 9, was: “Youth divorced his wife and married his mother-in-law.” The report stated, “Widespread discussion has started on social media that a youth in India divorced his own wife and married his former mother-in-law. A video of this incident has already gone viral. According to information from Indian media outlets, the incident is from the Akbarpur area of Kanpur Dehat district in Uttar Pradesh.”
The woman in the photo used in this report also matches the one in the circulated photo. Multiple (1, 2, 3, 4) national media outlets were also seen referring to the incident as an event in India.
Further verification shows that multiple media outlets in India (1, 2, 3, 4) have published reports on the incident. The headline of a report published on June 8 by the India-based media outlet Times of India was, “Uttar Pradesh man marries mother-in-law, seeks blessings in viral video.” The report stated, “A video has surfaced on social media showing a woman and her son-in-law from Kanpur Dehat, who have claimed to have entered into a court marriage with mutual consent.”
That is to say, the incident of an Indian youth marrying his mother-in-law is circulating under the name of a Jamaat leader.
