Video of man being hacked to death in Cox's Bazar is actually from India
A video claiming to show a man being hacked to death in broad daylight on a street in Cox’s Bazar has spread on social media. However, Dismislab’s fact-check found the original incident took place in Andhra Pradesh, India, over a land dispute; the video has no connection with Bangladesh.
Since August 13, several Facebook pages and profiles have shared the video with the same claim (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Some posts criticize the interim government, writing, “A man was hacked to death in broad daylight on the street in Cox’s Bazar this afternoon. Murders continue and will continue. Because this is a country of the rich.” Some other posts used negative hashtags about Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, such as “#StepDownFascistYunus.”

A video post with the same claim has been viewed more than 70,000 times. The footage shows a man striking another lying on the street with a sharp weapon. Several other people appear nearby. Many commenters assumed the incident happened in Bangladesh. One wrote, “What’s happening to this country. Mob violence goes on. Stop everything immediately.” Another commented, “This country has turned into a land of murder and rape.”
Reverse image search of several key frames of the video revealed two identical clips on Instagram and Facebook (1, 2), both posted on August 11. The footage matched exactly with the video claimed to be from Cox’s Bazar. The captions and location details of the videos shared on August 11 indicate the event occurred in Andhra Pradesh, India.
Further verification using keywords from the captions led to a 48-second video posted on August 11 by a Facebook profile named Afsar Khans containing detailed information. On the same day, two Telugu-language local YouTube channels, BIG TV Live and SumanTV Tirupati, uploaded videos of the same incident. Translated descriptions confirm it happened in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Several Indian news outlets (1, 2, 3, 4) also published reports on it.

According to multiple Indian media reports, on August 10 in Koyyalagudem village of Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh, a man named Jakku Siva stabbed his mother, Jakku Narsamma, in public over a property dispute. She was severely injured and died on August 11 while undergoing treatment in the hospital.
The footage of this Indian incident is now being falsely shared on several pages and profiles as if it happened in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.
