Indian killing video shared as Bangladesh incident
A man lies on the street while another person repeatedly hacks him. Everyone around watches, but no one comes forward. A video recently posted on Facebook suggests that such an incident occurred in Bangladesh. However, Dismislab’s verification found that the incident took place in India.
According to reports published by Indian media, the video shows a garment trader being hacked in public on August 4 at Singareni Colony in the Saidabad area of Hyderabad.
A 6-second video was posted from a Facebook profile on August 7 which shows a man in yellow clothes repeatedly attacking another person with a machete-like weapon. The post reads, “After the 24 independence, Jamaat-BNP together are giving the people of this country the gift of independence this way.” (verbatim).
On the same day, from another Facebook ID named Jago Bangali Jago the same video was posted with the caption, “Oh country, I have become speechless.”
During its investigation, Dismislab conducted a reverse image search using several keyframes from the video. The search found an exact match with a video report published on August 5 on the verified Instagram account of Indian media outlet India Today. The video description reads, “A cloth merchant was allegedly murdered in Hyderabad’s Saidabad area, prompting police to launch a manhunt for the accused, who is believed to have fled to Mumbai. Investigators are examining the motive behind the killing as efforts continue to trace and arrest the suspect.” However, the media outlet blurred the image of the deceased person in its video report.
Further verification through searches using relevant keywords found news reports about the incident published by several media outlets (1, 2, 3). According to these reports, the video shows 35-year-old garment trader Fasi Ahmed being hacked in public on August 4 at Singareni Colony in the Saidabad police station area of Hyderabad. He died at the scene after being attacked with a sharp weapon. Eyewitnesses at the scene recorded several videos, which later spread on social media.
Therefore, the scene of a man being hacked to death on the street took place not in Bangladesh but in India. The claim being circulated is false.
