Awami League leader's death, though circulated recently, actually occurred in August 2024
Multiple posts have recently been circulated on Facebook sharing images of a former union council chairman and Awami League leader in Chandpur district and condemning his killing. Commenters on these posts describe it as a recent event. A fact-check by Dismislab found, however, that the incident actually took place in August 2024, and is being circulated on social media with a misleading caption. The cause of the man’s death also remains under investigation.
A post from a Facebook group called “Moncho 71” first came to Dismislab’s attention. An account under the name “Kapil Halder Sajal” had posted three images in the post, with a caption that reads, “We strongly condemn and protest this killing. Humanity has today revealed itself in its most savage form. Killing people seems to have become an addiction for BNP and Jamaat. Oh, Bangladesh — the man you see lying on the bed is Mostafa Kamal Majumder, the current chairman of Suchipara North Union. His crime is that he was affiliated with the Awami League and had been elected chairman of the union council during the Awami League government’s tenure. For that crime, BNP and Jamaat terrorists formed a mob, beat him and brutally murdered him. We strongly condemn and protest this killing. We offer our condolences to the grieving family. We also express our hatred toward this illegitimate government. We demand that all these killers be arrested immediately and brought to justice.”

As of the time of writing, the post had been shared more than 200 times, received more than 1,500 reactions and drawn more than 300 comments. One comment read, “I strongly condemn this incident, and I will also say he was a human being. There is truly no rule of law in this country — it feels like we are living in the age of Jahiliyyah [pre-Islamic era in Arabia, often used to mean a period of ignorance or lawlessness]. Law and order in this country has deteriorated so badly that it cannot be described in words. People are living in fear these days, not knowing whose turn will be next. O Allah, please protect everyone and grant us guidance. Amin.” Another comment read, “I spit in the face of the BNP-Jamaat coalition government. Calling them animals would be an insult to animals. Shame! Shame!”
Using relevant keyword searches, Dismislab found at least 140 posts carrying the exact same caption, uploaded across various groups from multiple personal profiles and pages.
The oldest version of the post was found on an account under the name “Kamruzzaman Liton,” posted at 11:50pm on July 12. Within two minutes, the same account shared the post in at least four different groups. The account’s bio identifies its owner as “Former assistant editor, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Chandpur district unit.”
To verify the claims, Dismislab conducted a reverse image search on several photographs used in the post, which led to reports from multiple news outlets, including Somoy News (1, 2, 3). A subsequent keyword search also uncovered two additional reports published by the news outlets Ajker Patrika and Jugantor. According to information found in those reports, the death of Mostafa Kamal Majumder — a former chairman of Suchipara North Union in Shahrasti Upazila, Chandpur district, and an Awami League leader — is not a recent incident. The reports state that his body was recovered from a ditch near his home on August 6, 2024, and was subsequently buried. The caption of the circulating post, however, incorrectly refers to Mostafa Kamal Majumder as the “current chairman” of Suchipara Union.

The news reports further stated that six months after his death, on February 4, 2025, his wife, Fatema Kamal, filed a case at Shahrasti Model Police Station. As a result, on June 3, 2025, upon the court’s orders and in the presence of an executive magistrate, his body was exhumed and sent to the morgue for a postmortem examination.
A keyword search also surfaced a report from a local news outlet called “Priyo Chandpur,” published on August 7, 2024. That report further stated that on the evening of August 5, a group of miscreants launched a sudden attack on Mostafa Kamal at the local Shorshak Bazar area. When his younger brother attempted to save him, the attackers assaulted him as well. In an effort to save his life, Mostafa Kamal jumped into a nearby pond. After the attackers left, relatives began searching for him, and his body was recovered from the pond the following morning.
For further verification, Dismislab contacted Mahbubur Rahman, the current officer-in-charge of Shahrasti Police Station. He said: “The case is still under investigation. The physician has not yet given any opinion on the cause of death.” He explained that because the body had been exhumed 10 months after death, it had fully decomposed, leaving physicians unable to find sufficient evidence from the remains to determine the cause of death.
He also said that police had not yet submitted any final report or charge sheet on the matter to the court.
In conclusion, the death of Awami League leader Mostafa Kamal Majumder took place in August 2024. This nearly two-year-old incident and the accompanying photographs are now being circulated on social media as though they were a recent incident, creating confusion among ordinary users.
