A video has recently been circulating on Facebook claiming that BNP activists vandalised and looted the house of an Awami League leader in Dinajpur. However, a Dismislab fact-check found that the vandalism took place in Lakhai Upazila of Habiganj following the death of an elderly man.

The video was posted on June 29 from a personal Facebook profile. The 22-second clip shows a ransacked house with furniture scattered around and multiple damaged walls. The caption reads: “BNP terrorists vandalised and looted the house of an Awami League leader in Dinajpur” (translated from Bangla).

Screengrabs of Facebook posts circulating the false claim.

At the time of publishing this report, the video had been viewed nearly 56,000 times, shared more than 1,300 times, and received reactions from over 3,800 users. Comments indicate that many users believed the claim to be true. The same video was also shared from multiple other personal Facebook profiles (1,2) with the identical claim.

To verify the footage, Dismislab extracted several keyframes from the video and conducted a reverse image search. The search led to a June 27 report by a news outlet named Agrojatra Pratidin titled, “Vandalism and looting at rival homes following an elderly man’s death in Lakhai.” Images published in the report match the front portion of the vandalised house seen in the viral video.

Further verification using relevant keywords found reports (1, 2, 3, 4) on the incident published by multiple news outlets.

According to an ATN News report published on June 27, allegations of vandalism and looting surfaced in Lakhai upazila of Habiganj following the death of an elderly man. Footage used in the report shows the same damaged house visible in the viral video.

A June 27 report by Dainik Banglar Khobor states that extensive vandalism and looting took place at the homes of rival families in Muriyauk village of Lakhai upazila after the death of 79-year-old Bacchu Mia while he was undergoing treatment. The incidents reportedly occurred on the night of June 25 and continued throughout June 26.

According to multiple news reports, the vandalism took place in Lakhai Upazila of Habiganj following the death of an elderly man.

According to the report, Bacchu Mia died on June 19. After news of his death spread, members of his group allegedly carried out repeated attacks on rival households. Local residents said the targeted houses had already been vacated by male members to avoid legal complications and arrest. Bacchu Mia’s family claimed that he died from injuries sustained in an earlier clash, though the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed pending the post-mortem report.

Therefore, although the viral posts claim the footage shows an attack on the house of an Awami League leader in Dinajpur, the video actually depicts the aftermath of an incident in Lakhai, Habiganj. There is no verified information identifying the political affiliation of either of the parties involved in the incident.
