Video falsely claims army will play no role on Awami League anniversary

The army has stated that it will have no effective role in the 77th founding anniversary program of the activity-banned Awami League. Recently, such a claim has been made by spreading a video on the social media platform Facebook. However, a fact-check by Dismislab reveals that the video is from an army press briefing regarding an anti-terrorism operation in Sreepur, Gazipur. According to media reports, this is a scene from a press briefing organized at the army’s Gazipur camp to protest against propaganda surrounding the arrest of “identified terrorist” Enamul Haque Mollah in Gazipur on November 7, 2025.

On June 22, the 13-second video was posted from a Facebook page named “Selina Hayat Ivy” with a caption stating, “The army has clearly stated that it will not play any effective role surrounding tomorrow’s June 23 program for the 77th founding anniversary of the Awami League. The army is already under various domestic and international pressures; you all should prepare without fear and take to the field spontaneously. Tomorrow, the streets of Dhaka will be under our control, Inshallah (If God wills). Joy Bangla (Victory to Bangla), Joy #Bangabandhu.”

So far, the video has been viewed more than 82,000 times and shared 177 times.

The video was also shared with the same claim from several personal profiles (1, 2, 3, 4) on Facebook. In the video, an army officer wearing a nameplate reading “Lutfor” is seen speaking in the context of the Bangladesh Army working in favor of justice and the country. Here, no match is found between the officer’s statement and the claim written in the post’s description.

Conducting a reverse image search using keyframes of the video led to a video on the YouTube channel of the news outlet Dhaka Protidin. The video published on November 7 of last year was titled, “Army press briefing on anti-terrorism operation in Sreepur of Gazipur.” An exact match to the circulated video is found in the portion from the 12th second to the 22nd second of the 4-minute 19-second video. Additionally, video reports from multiple media outlets (1, 2, 3) were found on this matter.

For further verification regarding this incident, Dismislab searched various relevant keywords. It was found that multiple (1, 2, 3) reports were published in different media outlets regarding the same incident. The headline of a report published in Jugantor on November 7 was, “Army alleges ‘propaganda’ being spread surrounding Enamul’s arrest.”

The report stated that the army alleged that “propaganda” is being carried out surrounding the incident of arresting ‘identified terrorist’ Enamul Haque Mollah in Gazipur. Protesting against this propaganda, it was stated at a press briefing organized at the Gazipur camp that the army is always in favor of justice and the country. Lieutenant Colonel Md Lutfor Rahman made these remarks at the press briefing organized on November 7 at the army camp of the Rice Research Institute in Gazipur Metropolis.

That is to say, the video of the army officer’s statement is a part of a statement given in a different incident. It has no connection with the founding anniversary program of the Awami League.
