AI-generated image falsely shows woman eating in gloves
An image showing many women wearing burqas and niqabs sitting together and eating rice at a madrasa has spread on the social media platform Facebook. In it, one woman is seen wearing black gloves, and eating rice with her gloved hand. However, Dismislab’s fact-check has found that the image was created using AI.
The image was posted on September 25 from the verified Facebook profile of writer Taslima Nasrin. In the first part of the caption, she wrote, “At a time when questions are being raised about whether humanity will survive, they are eating rice with gloved hands. Lest any unrelated man should see her hand! Seeing the hand would be a sin, and if it is a sin, they might miss out on heaven. That heaven, where their husbands will copulate for eternity with seventy-two houris. They have no freedom even to show their own hands, yet they are making every possible effort to reach the heaven of their husbands’ eternal sexual freedom!”
As of the publication of this report, the post had received more than 7,500 reactions and approximately 60 comments. The post had been shared 358 times.
The video was seen posted with the same claim from multiple Facebook profiles (1, 2, 3, 4) and a page.
To verify the authenticity of the image, its various visual elements were first examined. In the first image, some blurriness and spelling errors were noticed in the text on a banner hung on the wall. On the other hand, multiple inconsistencies and signs of distortion were also observed in the women’s faces, the position of their hands, their sitting posture, and the number of plates. One woman’s hand alone is visible on the table, but there is no plate of rice there. Another woman appears to be sitting on top of the table with crossed legs.
Also, no reliable source was found by conducting a reverse image search of the picture. Dismislab subsequently checked whether the image was AI-generated. When examined using OpenAI’s image analysis system, an AI-detection tool, it was identified as an image created using AI.
In other words, an AI-generated image is being circulated with the claim that it shows a woman eating rice with a gloved hand.
