Recently, a video of a child’s body recovered from inside a rice drum has been shared on Facebook claiming that the body was found in the house of a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader. But fact-check shows the video is more than two years old. Media reports confirm that the original incident took place on October 2, 2022. At that time, a child went missing in Jashore, and the next day, the child’s body was recovered from a rice drum in a neighbor’s house.

Several Facebook users (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) were seen sharing the video with the same claim since August 25 this year. One of these video posts alone has been viewed more than 8,000 times and shared over 260 times. The description of the post reads, “After the abduction, when the ransom was not paid, the child’s body was stuffed inside a rice drum at the house of a BNP leader. How much lower will BNP people stoop for money? If you need money, take money, just give my child’s life back!” The post also included the hashtag “#StepDownFascistYounus.” In the one-minute video, a man in a yellow T-shirt is seen taking rice out of a drum. From the 17th second of the video, police are seen taking away a woman wearing a red scarf.

A search using keyframes of the video shows that the same video was uploaded from a personal Facebook profile on October 3, 2022. The description states, “How the dead body of a child was recovered from a rice drum in Jashore! You won’t be able to hold back tears after watching it. DB police recovered the body of a 4-year-old child named Sanjida from a rice drum kept inside a house in Patenagali village of Jashore Sadar upazila, Jashore district. The owner of the house, Anjuara Begum,  has been arrested.” The same video was also posted from multiple Facebook pages (1, 2, 3, 4) and profiles. On the same day, several YouTube channels (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) also ran videos about the incident.

Several media outlets (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) also published reports at that time. According to a Prothom Alo report published on October 2, 2022, the victim, Sanjida, was the daughter of Sohel Rana of Patenagali village in Jashore Sadar upazila. Neighbor Anjuara lured the child inside her house by offering an apple. The next day, detectives recovered Sanjida’s body from the rice drum in Anjuara’s house.Other reports published at that time made no mention of the political involvement of the victim’s family, nor was there any indication that the death was related to political conflicts.
