Video circulated claiming persecution of Hindus features Muslim woman
A video claiming to show an incident of persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh was circulated on the social media platform X. However, Dismislab’s fact-check has found that the woman shown being attacked in the video is not Hindu.
On August 25, a 10-second video was posted from an X account named “Vikas Pokhariyal,” which shows vandalism of a house. It also shows a woman being attacked. The post’s caption reads, “Life of Hindus in Bangladesh. Most of them are Dalits.”
As of the publication of this report, the video had been viewed more than 57,000 times and shared more than 1,600 times. Against the backdrop of the recent movement in India, one person commented, “Behind the curtain of Bangladesh style Gen Z revolution, there is a full plan to convert India into Bangladesh.” Another wrote, “That why narendra modi is important for india.”
Through a key-frame search, Dismislab found video reports published by multiple media outlets about the original incident (1, 2). The videos in these reports match exactly with the recently circulated video. Prothom Alo wrote in its report, “A local Krishak Dal leader has been accused of attacking and vandalizing the house of an expatriate in Lalmonirhat. Police arrested the leader on August 19 in connection with the incident.”
In a detailed report on the incident, Ajker Patrika reported that on August 18, in Duhuli village of Chalbala union in Kaliganj upazila, an altercation took place between Shah Alam and the family of Mannan, an expatriate worker in Oman, over a goat grazing on grass. At one point, Shah Alam and his followers attacked and vandalized the expatriate’s house using homemade weapons and sticks. When she attempted to resist, Mannan’s wife, Rozina Begum, was attacked and injured. Shah Alam was the president of the Krishak Dal’s Chalbala union branch. Following the attack, he was expelled from all positions in the party, including his primary membership.
Considering their names, we can ascertain that Mannan and his wife Rozina Begum are Muslim. Also, this attack was not communal in nature.
