Edited video falsely claims Fakhrul praised Hasina in Parliament
A video was circulated on YouTube claiming that BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir praised the contributions of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the National Parliament. However, a fact-check by Dismislab found that the video was edited and that the claim was false. Mirza Fakhrul was describing the contributions of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia throughout her political career, not Sheikh Hasina.
On August 13, 2026, a YouTube channel named “BD News Today” uploaded a video with the caption, “Development like Sheikh Hasina’s will not happen even in the next 100 years; Mirza Fakhrul created a storm in Parliament over the Awami League! Awamilig.” (verbatim). At the beginning of the video, Mirza Fakhrul can be heard saying, “I will not say much. I will just say a few things. When she was prime minister, we saw that, when she was in government, she did such things, she played a groundbreaking role in the development of women in Bangladesh.”
In the video, opposition leaders can be seen chanting, “Agents of fascism, beware, be careful,” and “Fascism and democracy cannot coexist.” The video then features a narrator saying, “BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir raised a storm in Parliament by standing up and speaking about Sheikh Hasina. His remarks created extreme tension among the opposition parties in Parliament.” According to the narrator, although some of his remarks about the Awami League before the election had drawn criticism, he this time praised several of Sheikh Hasina’s initiatives in Parliament. It was against this backdrop, the video claims, that extreme tension arose in Parliament. The video claims that he described Sheikh Hasina as a “role model for development.” It also shows footage of various development projects from Sheikh Hasina’s tenure and the Awami League’s rule. As of the publication of this report, the video had been viewed more than 10,000 times.
Videos carrying the same claim were also found posted on multiple YouTube channels (1, 2, 3).
Using relevant keywords, Dismislab found a video published on the Somoy TV YouTube channel. The audio of Mirza Fakhrul’s remarks at 2 minutes 30 seconds and 2 minutes 47 seconds of the video, published on March 12, 2026, matches the audio in the circulated video. However, he is wearing different clothes in the portion of the circulated footage where he is heard speaking the praises. In the original remarks, he can be heard highlighting Begum Khaleda Zia’s contributions to democracy, press freedom, women’s development and economic reforms. He did not say anything in support of Sheikh Hasina in those remarks.
To verify the footage showing opposition lawmakers chanting slogans, another video published on the Star News YouTube channel on March 12 was found. Its title reads, “Opposition Walkout During President’s Address.” From the beginning of the video through the portion showing the circulated slogans, Nahid Islam, opposition chief whip; Hasnat Abdullah, a member of Parliament; and Abdullah Al Amin could be identified.

According to a report published by Samakal, during the first session of the 13th Parliament, 77 lawmakers from the Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP alliance left Parliament in protest against President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s address. When the president joined the session, lawmakers began displaying posters labeling him an “ally of fascism” and chanting slogans under the leadership of Nahid Islam, Hasnat Abdullah and Abdullah Al Amin. The opposition alliance later left the chamber amid commotion. In other words, the commotion had no connection to Mirza Fakhrul’s remarks.
Hence, the video circulated with the claim that Mirza Fakhrul praised ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in Parliament and that his remarks caused tension in the chamber is misleading. The video was created by cutting and editing footage from multiple separate incidents and presenting it with a misleading narrative.
