AI-generated video falsely claims Indian soldiers captured at Chinese border
A video has been recently circulated across multiple social media platforms in connection with tensions along the China–India border. The video claims that two Indian soldiers were captured by Chinese troops. However, a fact-check by Dismislab found that the video was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).
On June 30, a Facebook profile named “Sotto Kotha Sotto Ghotona” (Truthful Words, Truthful Events) posted the video. The caption read: “Chinese soldiers have captured two Indian soldiers!”. In the 16-second video, two individuals wearing Indian military uniforms bearing the Indian flag are seen kneeling with their hands tied with rope in front of several armed soldiers dressed in Chinese military uniforms, standing before a Chinese flag. The video also displays a logo reading “Sesh TV.”
As of writing this report, the video had been viewed more than 61,000 times, and the post had been shared more than 900 times. In the comments, one user wrote, “This serves you right, you can only stand against us.” Another commented, “Many thanks to China.” The same video bearing the “Sesh TV” logo has also been circulated by several other Facebook and Instagram accounts.
The video was first posted by the Facebook page of “Sesh TV,” which identifies itself as a news outlet. The video has been viewed more than 750,000 times, and the post has been shared more than 8,500 times. One commenter wrote, “Well done, Chinese army, long live.” Another said, “India says it will occupy Bangladesh in one minute; if it can, let it occupy China.”
The “Sesh TV” page was created using the former logo of Desh TV. The page has previously disseminated multiple videos generated using AI (1, 2).
Dismislab identified several inconsistencies in the video during its examination. The two individuals presented as Indian soldiers appear to have identical faces. Although the audio contains the voices of many people nearby, the video does not show a crowd of that size. The Chinese flag patch on the uniform of a soldier on the right side is noticeably larger than normal. The faces of the purported Chinese soldiers are also blurred and indistinct.
Verification using the AI content detection tool Hive Moderation also indicated a high likelihood that the video was generated using AI. Moreover, no reliable news outlet has reported that Chinese troops captured Indian soldiers.
In other words, the video circulating with the claim that two Indian soldiers were captured by Chinese troops is not authentic; it was generated using AI.
