Video claiming Mohakhali pedestrian murder is actually from India
A video was recently circulated on multiple social media platforms with the claim that a pedestrian was being beaten to death in Mohakhali at midnight. However, a fact-check by Dismislab reveals that the video is from India.
According to reports from Indian media, on July 17, an incident occurred in the Indira Nagar police station area of Lucknow where a young man was beaten for not paying extortion money. According to the victim’s complaint, eight to 10 individuals surrounded him and attacked him with sticks, rods, and other weapons. The circulated video is of that incident.
On July 20, a 6-second video was posted from a personal Facebook profile with the caption, “Scene of a pedestrian b/eaten to d*eath in Mohakhali at midnight!!.” In the video, three people are seen beating a person lying on the road with sticks.
Up until the writing of this report, the video has been viewed more than 67,000 times and shared more than 1,500 times. The video has been shared with the same claim on multiple personal Facebook profiles (1, 2, 3, 4).
During the investigation, a reverse image search of the video’s keyframes yielded a Dainik Tamsa Sanket report published on July 19. The headline of this report was, “Youth brutally beaten for not paying chanda.” The scene of the circulated video perfectly matches the video used in this report. The report stated, “An incident of a young man being beaten for not paying chanda in the Indira Nagar police station area of the capital has come to light. The victim alleges that eight to 10 people surrounded him and attacked him with sticks, rods, and other weapons. When he was severely injured, the accused mistook him as dead and fled the scene.”
