An image and a video were recently circulated on the social media platform Facebook with the claim that people are being publicly murdered in Bangladesh. However, a fact-check by Dismislab reveals that the scene is from Gujarat, India. According to Indian media, on July 7, in the Rajkot district of Gujarat state, a person named Jayant Vaghela stabbed and killed his mother’s partner, Kamlesh Vaghela.

On July 11, the video was posted from a personal Facebook profile named “Sandwip Awami League Poribar” (Sandwip Awami League Family) with a caption reading, “Oh Allah, a person is publicly murdered like this in my Sonar Bangla (Golden Bengal). Even though the world in going through a modern age, Bangladesh is currently in the age of oppressive autocrats. Allah, please guide them.” The scene was also shared with the same claim from multiple (1, 2) personal Facebook profiles.

To verify the authenticity of the claim, a reverse image search yielded a report published on July 8 by the India-based media outlet India Today. The headline of the report was, “Video: Man chases mother’s live-in partner down the street, stabs him to death.” This report stated, “A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his mother’s live-in partner by repeatedly stabbing him in Gujarat’s Rajkot district. The incident took place on Tuesday, July 7, with multiple onlookers present. The killing was captured on a nearby CCTV camera. The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Kamlesh Vaghela. The accused, 20-year-old Jayant Vaghela, is the son of his live-in partner, Neeta.”

The image used in this report perfectly matches the circulated video and images. Additionally, multiple Indian media outlets (1, 2, 3) have published reports on the incident.
