A video recently shared on Facebook falsely claims to show a post-election attack by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activists. However, a Dismislab fact-check found that the footage shows a clash between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami supporters in Naogaon on February 3, well before the February 12 national election.

The original video was repurposed and posted by several Facebook users on February 14 (1, 2). The caption claimed BNP activists attacked people for voting against the party and warned it was “just the beginning.”

Facebook video post circulating the false claim.

The clip shared by the “Jamaat-e-Islam Daripalla” page has been reshared over 90 times as of the writing of this report. In one comment, a user retorted, “This is a glimpse of ‘I have a plan’”—a reference to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman’s ‘I have a plan’ speech after his return from London where he lived 17 years in self-imposed exile.

A reverse image search found that the video (1, 2) was published on YouTube by several media outlets. The daily Samakal’s February 3 report was titled: ‘10 injured as BNP-Jamaat supporters clash in Naogaon during election campaign.” The video posted on February 14 matched parts of the Samakal video.

YouTube video published Samakal News.

Further investigation led to a Prothom Alo article detailing a clash between BNP and Jamaat supporters in Makhna Komalgota village of Naogaon’s Hansaigari union during the election campaign, injuring at least 13. BNP candidate Zahidul Islam won from the Naogaon constituency.

The claim that the video shows post-election violence by BNP supporters is false. It shows a pre-election clash between BNP and Jamaat activists.
